Wolfpit Plantation, originally
owned by the Harris family,
began in the 1840s on 300
acres of land obtained by a
land grant in the early
1800s, with the house
being built in 1849. Named
for its proximity to Wolfpen
Branch, Wolfpit's crops
included tobacco, cotton,
corn and soybeans, and
sheep, pigs and chickens
were raised as livestock. The house is a prime example of
the Greek Revival style typical of that time period, and the front hall
and two lower front rooms retain much of the original Greek Revival
woodwork. On the grounds, many of the original outbuildings are still
standing: an old log and mortar tobacco barn, plantation
kitchen/tenant house, pack house, carriage house with mule stall,
tool shed and sheep shed. According to some accounts, a regiment
of Union General William Tecumseh Sherman's army camped on
the property during his infamous "March to the Sea" during the Civil
War. Native American and Civil War artifacts have been found on
the grounds, including arrowheads, an officer's sword casing and a
Union belt buckle.
